Itinerary

Day 1: Munich

Arrive at Munich Airport and transfer to your hotel in the Oberammergau area for two nights. A welcome dinner is included this evening.

Day 2: Oberammergau and the Passion Play

On arrival in Oberammergau, explore the picturesque town at leisure and perhaps visit the museum to discover more about the Play and the region’s woodcarving history. The Play starts after lunch and there is an included dinner during the three-hour interval. Transfer to the hotel after the Play finishes.

Day 3: Salzburg

After breakfast we drive to Salzburg for a locally guided walking tour of the city. Remember The Sound of Music? On this tour you’ll see some of the movie’s historic sights and filming locations, including Leopoldskron Palace, Frohnburg Palace and the impressive Mirabell Palace Gardens. After our included lunch, you’re free to explore at leisure before continuing to our hotel in St Georgen, our base for five nights. Dinner is in the hotel restaurant this evening.

Day 4: Berchtesgaden, Lake Königssee and Cruise

Today we visit Berchtesgaden, a picturesque Bavarian market town, and nearby Lake Königssee (King’s Lake). We cruise on the emerald-green waters, surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery, to the St Bartholomä Peninsula and its old Baroque-style church topped by red, flame-shaped domes.

Day 5: Salzkammergut, Cruise and Chocolate Workshop

We have a scenic drive through the Salzkammergut, the Austrian Lake District. Highlights include Lake Fuschl and Lake Mondsee, where the beautiful twin-towered church was the setting for the wedding scene in The Sound of Music. You’ll also visit the picturesque village of St Gilgen on the shores of Lake Wolfgang, where you’ll learn how the well-known Mozartkugeln chocolates are produced and have the chance to make one of your own. A cruise across the lake takes you to picturesque St Wolfgang. We then travel to Lake Traunsee before returning to our hotel.

Day 6: Bad Ischl, Hallstatt and Salt Mines

Today we visit the spa town of Bad Ischl and tour the Kaiservilla, the elegant summer residence of Emperor Franz Josef, where he signed the declaration of war on Serbia, leading to the First World War. We then continue to the beautiful lakeside village of Hallstatt, famous for its salt mines.

Day 7: Hohenwerfen Fortress

We travel to the mighty Hohenwerfen Fortress today, perched on a hill above the Salzachtal Valley and recognisable from the film Where Eagles Dare. During your tour, discover more about medieval life in the castle and enjoy the remarkable views. The castle is also home to a falconry museum.

Day 8: Munich

Today you’ll transfer to Munich Airport for your onward transport.
