Celebrate the magic of Mid-Winter Christmas …
Tour commences and concludes in either Auckland (6 day) or Wellington (5 day).
The Northern Explorer train connects Auckland with our bustling capital, Wellington and enroute see the scenic wonders of Middle Earth, soar over
towering viaducts, across the high plains of the volcanic plateau, and beneath three magnificent volcanoes.
From Wellington we go to Greytown – a rural town in the South Wairarapa District and the setting for our Mid Year Christmas Market and Celebrations.
Travel in comfort by rail and coach, stay in charming accommodation, and enjoy shared meals, scenic coastlines, boutique vineyards, and festive village
charm. With a gentle pace and friendly company, this delightful mid-year escape promises lasting memories.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Thursday | Auckland to Wellington
Your Mid-Winter Christmas escape begins as we depart Auckland together for a memorable rail journey through the heart of the North Island. Settle into your comfortable seat, relax, and enjoy the ever-changing scenery as it unfolds outside your window with rolling farmland, wide-open plains, snow capped mountains and dramatic volcanic landscapes.
Arriving in Wellington late afternoon, we transfer to our hotel where you’ll have time to unpack and unwind. This evening, we gather for a welcome drink — a further opportunity to get to know your fellow travellers — followed by a relaxed and enjoyable (included) Welcome Dinner together. D
Day 2 – Friday | Wellington to Greytown
After a leisurely breakfast, we explore some of Wellington’s highlights before travelling over the Remutaka Ranges into the picturesque Wairarapa region. We take our time, with scenic stops along the way, ensuring a comfortable and unhurried journey.
Mid Year Christmas Market Tour
On arrival in charming Greytown, we settle into our centrally located accommodation for the next few nights — no need to rush or repack. The afternoon is free to relax or enjoy a gentle stroll with new friends through the town’s boutique shops and cafés. B,D
Day 3 – Saturday | Martinborough & Greytown Christmas Festival
Today we enjoy a relaxed outing to nearby Martinborough, well known for its welcoming vineyards and artisan producers. At Blue Earth, we meet the owners and hear their story while learning about their olive oil and wine-making — a delightful and personal experience.
We then sit down together for a delicious vineyard lunch at Moy Hall, sharing good food and conversation. Later, there is the option to visit The Runholder for tastings of locally crafted Lighthouse Gin and Te Kairanga Wines (at your own expense).
In the evening, Greytown transforms into a magical Christmas setting. Wrap up warmly and wander at your own pace through festive markets and sparkling light displays. Enjoy the atmosphere with your fellow travellers — dinner tonight is relaxed and at your leisure. B,L
Day 4 – Sunday | Cape Palliser & Lake Ferry
Today’s scenic drive takes us to Cape Palliser, the southernmost point of the North Island. We travel comfortably along the coast, passing Lake Onoke and the small fishing settlement of Ngawi. At Cape Palliser, we may see the native fur seal colony resting along the shoreline.
Those who wish can admire the historic lighthouse and take in the sweeping coastal views. There is no rush — simply enjoy the fresh sea air and beautiful surroundings.
We pause for a pleasant lunch at the Lake Ferry Hotel before returning to Greytown for a quiet and relaxing evening together. B,D
Day 5 – Monday | Castlepoint & Mid-Winter Christmas Celebration
This morning we visit the stunning coastline at Castlepoint. With its lagoon, lighthouse, and distinctive rock formations, it is a peaceful and scenic place to enjoy nature.
You may prefer to sit and admire the ocean views or, if you feel comfortable, take the easy 30-minute return lighthouse walk at your own pace. Later, we visit Brancepeth Homestead (or similar).
This elegant historic home provides a warm and welcoming setting for our visit. Tonight at our included Farewell Dinner there is the chance to share experiences, laughter, stories, and good company over a delicious meal. B,D
Day 6 – Tuesday | Featherston & Farewell
After breakfast, we farewell the Wairarapa and travel to Featherston. At the Fell Engine Museum, we enjoy a guided tour and engaging presentation about this unique part of New Zealand’s railway history.
You’ll then have some relaxed free time — perhaps visit the Heritage Museum, browse the well-known bookshops, or simply enjoy a coffee before we continue back over the Remutaka Ranges.
We return to Wellington Airport or Railway Station for onward travel, farewelling new friends and taking home fond memories of a comfortable and companionable Mid-Winter Christmas escape. B
